Baker Intern

We are Butternut Bakehouse, a bakery serving charming, rustic handcrafted pastries located on Mass Ave in Arlington. Due to our focus on quality small-batch baked goods, and our community-centric customer service, our business is growing, and our team is expanding. We are seeking passionate back of house team members eager to cultivate a creative, fun, and consistent café environment.

We are looking for a hard-working and reliable baker who is also a savory cook who is responsible for preparing ingredients for the cooking process. This role involves basic cooking duties such as chopping, boiling and roasting vegetables, baking egg souffle, caramelizing onions. Another aspect is to support all other senior bakers in production - be it portioning, mise-en-place, scooping, shaping etc.

A successful applicant is friendly and will have some industry experience, attention to detail, and be a proactive, community-oriented team player. You must understand and comply with food and sanitation guidelines and regulations, be quick and diligent, and be willing to improve on the job.

You will be part of a small team in a growing business and will have the opportunity to learn many baking techniques.

Shift requirements

This is a good starter position for an early stage career baker or chef. This is a position for about 30 hours per week with required weekend availability.

Shifts include:

  • Saturday and Sunday 8 am-3pm

  • Mondays: 9 am – 3 pm

  • Thursdays and Fridays: 10 am – 4 pm or 10 am -4 pm.

Responsibilities

  • Setting up and sanitizing workstations.

  • Following prep lists created by chefs.

  • Measuring ingredients and seasonings and preparing cooking ingredients such as roasting vegetables, caramelizing onions to be used in the cooking process.

  • Baking egg souffle

  • Mise en place

  • Portioning, shaping, scooping

  • Ensuring all food items are properly stored and easily accessible.

  • Assisting senior bakers in wrapping cakes, organizing freezer and fridge

  • Doing dishes if needed

  • Maintaining a clean, orderly, and sanitized kitchen.

Requirements

  • Standing for long periods maximum of 8 hours per shift

  • Good knife skills.

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills

  • Dependable transport - may be needed at pur Belmont location once a week

Compensation and Benefits

  • $15 per hour base plus tips ($5)

Butternut Bakehouse requires all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Due to cyclical surges in COVID-19 cases, we also have an adaptable mask policy and under certain conditions will require wearing a mask on shift.
